My guest this week is Todd Field, one of Hollywood’s best screenwriters. Mr. Field’s first major film, IN THE BEDROOM, starred Sissy Spacek and Tom Wilkinson.
IN THE BEDROOM was the adaptation of an eighteen page short story Andre Dubus wrote titled KILLINGS; the story of parents dealing with the grief of the murder of their son.
The film was nominated for an Academy Award for best film in 2002, as was the screenplay that Mr. Field wrote. It was a brilliant adaptation and I know you’ll find the story of how Mr. Dubus and Mr. Fields collaborated fascinating.
Mr. Field co-wrote the screenplay to LITLLE CHILDREN last year with Tom Perrotta, the author of the novel of the same name. I feel LITTLE CHILDREN was the best film released in 2006; some of its scenes still haunt me.
Once again the film and Mr. Field (and Mr. Perrotta) were nominated for Academy Awards.
Todd Field is establishing himself as our generation’s most exciting and daring screenwriter and I am honored to have him as a guest on the show. If you have not seen LITTLE CHILDREN (now available on DVD) or IN THE BEDROOM you are in for a treat. Enjoy!
